Monty Montcalm of Kill Devil Hills and Tom Filkins of Mann's Harbor have formed the Fil-Mont Theater Group, whose first adventure will be The Night Before Take-Off,
a seriocomic look at what might have happened to the Wright Brothers on the eve of their historic First Flight.
It is based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol,
which should give an idea of what happens to convince the brothers to continue their work and not hop on the morning mail boat back to Point Harbor.
The show is scheduled to run every Tuesday and Thursday in August and September at The Pearl Oceanside Restaurant at The Sea Ranch Hotel at MP7 on the Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills. There may also be three additional shows over the Labor Day weekend (August 28, 29 and 30) if the cast can be convinced to not head for the hills for a bit of peace and quiet.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and a cash bar will be available with hors d'oeuvres provided by The Pearl. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and run for about 45 minutes.
The cast includes such famous OBX stage notables as Julia Scheer, Mike Merit, Mike Daly, Donna Grim, Jay Tremble, Jack Jones and Dimitrios Vlahos.
The Pearl will also be offering pre- and-post show dinner specials in conjunction with the show.
The script for the play was developed by Tom Filkins for the Man Will Never Fly Society, the alter persona of the First Flight Society. It was only presented once about 5 years ago for that group. Tom has revised the script and it is now in rehearsals.
Tom was also the individual responsible
for the Baum Center epic productions of A Tribute To The Uso
and Wanchese The Musical.
