'Lost Colony' actressSettlement huts set ablaze, fog-shrouded scenes of slaughter and ominous sound effects were some of the new dramatic tools brandished at Friday’s opening night of the 72nd season of “The Lost Colony.”

In his second year with the nation’s longest-running outdoor symphonic drama, director Robert Richmond said he wanted to give the audience at Waterside Theatre the sense of what the 1587 English settlers may have experienced.

Little Women the Musical coming to the Theatre of Dare

Written in 1868 by Louisa May Alcott, the story follows the four March sisters: feisty Jo, romantic Meg, sweet Beth, and bratty Amy, growing up and coming of age during the Civil War. The novel has touched the hearts of generation after generation of mothers, daughters, sisters, and maybe even a gentleman or two. The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 2005, features lively songs, touching storylines, laughter, tears, and much more.

Lost Colony opens new seasonThe longest running outdoor drama in the country — The Lost Colony — opened its 71st season this weekend with more than 1,000 new costumes.

Less than a year ago, a fire destroyed the group’s costume shop. Only a few costumes that were stored elsewhere survived.

Randi Winter, an actress from Apex, described the opening night as a “new beginning.”

New Lost Colony costume shop finished, ready for opening night

A whirlwind campaign that likely tapped every possible resource, twisted an arm or two, and whipped together a network of supporters from every corner has given “The Lost Colony” a new costume shop in an impressive 233 days.

With actor Andy Griffith, the outdoor drama’s most famous alumnus, holding a pair of huge scissors, the ribbon was cut Wednesday at the entrance to the two-story building that replaces the shop that burned to the ground in September.

Griffith and his wife, Cindi, stayed for a few minutes at the reception inside the roomy shop, greeting veterans of the show with his familiar 100-watt smile.

Museum’s bet pays off

RALEIGH — It was a gamble: How many people would come if the N.C. Museum of History charged admission to an exhibition?

One month into a 12-week run, “Mysteries of the Lost Colony” paired with “A New World: England’s First View of America” has averaged more than 500 visitors a day. That puts it on track to meet director Ken Howard’s prediction of 40,000 visitors, making it perhaps the most popular attraction since the museum opened in its current location in 1994.
