Leatherback turtle nest on the Outer Banks

LeatherbackOn 18 June 2009, in the middle of the night, we had a very special visitor on one of our beaches. A large female sea turtle came up to nest. This was not the usual big loggerhead or occasional green turtle. This was the mother of all mother sea turtles – a leatherback! This turtle nest is extremely rare on the Outer Banks. It is the first leatherback nest ever documented this far north.
